Car Seat and Bike Helmet Safety at SpringFest

May 2013

Do you know the expiration date on your child's car seat? Do you know if your car seat has ever been involved in an accident? Do you know that the fine for violation of proper car seat use is $124? In short, never buy a car seat at a garage sale as you don't know when it expires or if it has ever been in an accident — both can seriously reduce the car seat's effectiveness.

Skyline Hospital, Klickitat County Health Department, and Columbia Gorge Safe Kids will be at SpringFest May 31 through June 2 to educate young families on the importance of car seat and helmet safety. Drop by the booth to learn about bike and car seat safety. On Saturday, June 1, Skyline's Trauma Nurses Talk Tough team will be doing fittings and demos between 10am-2pm. They will also be giving out coupons for helmets to families in need, thanks to funds provided by Southwest Washington EMS & Trauma Council. That same day, Skyline and Klickitat County Health Department will be sponsoring a car seat safety check from 12-4pm at the Pioneer Center.

Thanks to a Washington Child Passenger Safety Grant that Skyline Hospital received, there will be car seats available to qualifying families and a technician available to check car seats for proper fitting and safety. A minimal donation for the seat is required. Robin Hindahl and David Kavanagh are Klickitat County's certified car seat technicians.

If you are unable to make this event but are concerned about the safety of your child's car seat, feel free to make an appointment for a car seat technician by calling the Klickitat County Health Department at 509.493.1558.
